HRM Jobs Continues to Boom

Tourism in the Philippines is again climbing up the economic ladder after it weakened due to the Asian financial crisis in the year 1997.

The said crisis also caused the fall down of other economic sectors that dominoed to the whole country. Foreign investors went away, and tourism industry down-hilled to its all time low. And because of this, hotel business and premiered vacation spots weakened.

Thanks to the Philippine Government, this issue had been tackled, and given priority. The tourism industry has strengthened again and will continue as long as other reforms will be passed.

According to the government, the Philippines had reached its all-time high when it spiked at 3 million tourist last year 2006.

With the continues growth of the tourism, the demands for hotel staffs and Hotel and Restaurant Management o HRM professionals also rises.

According to the World Tourism Organization, tourism is the second largest industry that has the capacity to employ as much as 221 million people around the world.

Where are the Jobs?

Many of us may think that working abroad could be the only way to finance our family’s needs. The greener pasture is always outside the Philippines – this is how our mind is set by no body else but the media.

Although it is somehow true, they’ve managed to magnify the scenario and twisted the truth to look and sound more appealing to their audience.

But the truth is, everyday there are about 7,000 job openings from different fields from about 5,000 different employers. And I am only talking about jobs here in the Philippines.

So why do we end-up packing our things and leaving the country? Moreover, why is it that millions of Filipinos are unemployed; to think that our literary rate is over 90%. |correction needed|

According to the January study (Rates of Employment and Unemployment, by Sex and by Region) done by the National Statistics Office, the male has an employment rate of 91.9% and the female has 92.6%. The unemployment rate of the male is 8.1% and the female is 7.4%.

Looking at the regional data, it turned out that the National Capital Region and the Region-4A CALABARZON have the lowest employment rate which is 87.3% and 89.6% respectively. Compared to Region-2 Cagayan Valley’s employment rate of 96.9% and unemployment rate of 3.1%

The study doesn’t mean “as is”, what I mean is that the bright future still isn’t at the province, but is possible. And it also doesn’t mean that the metro has minimum job offers, but it is possible.

One analysis I could give is that the population affects these data.

Let’s say there are 50 jobs in all regions at any given time. Manila has about 200 populations and Cagayan Valley has only about 80 populations. In the end, 150 people from Manila will not have a job and only 30 persons in Cagayan Valley. Do the math.

Conclusion: Jobs are everywhere! Not only abroad and especially not only in the Metro.

Quick Info for Call Center Jobs

A call center is a centralized office used for the purpose of receiving and transmitting a large volume of requests by telephones (sometimes by chat).

Philippines, owing to its abundant English speakers that are college graduates and Americanized when it comes to English accent and cultural affinities is a popular call center site. The Philippines was an American colony for almost 50 years. The Philippines is said to be the best outsourcing site outside North America since the accent of Filipinos is nearer to that of American consumers than other ethnicities. However, due to its small population and unstable political climate, many large corporations are often afraid of outsourcing business to the Philippines.

Other popular call center sites are China, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. However, on pure cost terms, India and the Philippines have a considerable lead over the rest of the locations.

Popular call centers in the Philippines are mostly found in Makati, Ortigas and Alabang Area. Because of the shifting schedules Makati stands out as the most popular call center location in the Philippines due to its high population even at night making it less dangerous for night shift employees.

Call centers are also popular because of its salary and minimum qualifications. The image below shows the minimum and maximum salary of a call center agent.

My observation tells that even though Makati is known for its high paying jobs, call center agents located at Ortigas have higher salaries compared to other call center locations. I’m talking about Metro Manila only; I didn’t consider other call center job location like Cebu. When I consider it, it would be a whole lot different data.
